Astronomy enthusiasts and neophytes alike got a chance to peer at the stars — including our own sun — at a full day and night of science Saturday at the Coldwater Lake Science and Learning center northwest of Mount St. Helens.

COLDWATER RIDGE — At a lazy creek Wednesday morning nearby Coldwater Lake, six girls carefully collected water and tested it for sediment. They laughed and waded around the bank — sometimes yelling, “What the heck is that?” — or navigated slippery rocks in the riverbed. The group was starting day four of the annual GeoGirls camp, a five-day, four-night excursion at Mount St. Helens for 25 middle school and five high school girls from across Washington and Oregon. They’re led by female scientists, educators and university students on scientific experiments around the most active volcano in the Cascade Range.
