Karen Schaan joined us in 2019 as a volunteer and took her current role as the Seasonal Volunteer Programs Coordinator in 2023. She has extensive experience in the tech industry, including customer support, product planning, and project management. She spent over three years in the Peace Corps as a Business Development Volunteer in North Macedonia, where she wrote grants, taught English, worked in the economic development sector, and started an English Story Hour. During Covid, Karen volunteered for the SW Washington Red Cross as a training coordinator and disaster responder, as well as serving on a scholarship committee for the Mazamas. She is passionate about MSHI's goal of providing education and outdoor experiences to people who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

Karen's other passions include hiking, traveling, playing with her dog Koda, volunteering, baking, and crafts.

Karen's position is seasonal from approximately March-September.
