Mount St. Helens

John Calderazzo

Before it blew in 1980 I had never heard of it

never seen it from an airplane or high ridge

a tremendous bell of rock & snow

ringing with noonday light

drawing miles of forests

to attention.

Only later

did I see the photographs

the years of dawns & dusks

its Fugi summit glowing bright pin

a paper lantern floating over clouds

as though its secret heart of fire

had been blazing all that time.
