Gary Williams, 2024 Lead Guide, 2023 Lead Guide, 2022 Volunteer

Gary Williams, a seasoned business professional, traded his corporate life for the great outdoors just two years ago. Enthralled by the allure of forests and mountains, he found his path leading to the Mount St. Helens Institute, where he began as a mountain steward volunteer and later ascended to the role of a Guide. Gary’s passion is palpable in his work, as he provides transformational education centered on the unique geology, ecology, and cultural significance of the volcano. Fascinated by personal stories from the 1980 eruption, he cherishes the opportunity to interact with diverse groups, fulfilling their individual interests and curiosity. His nerdy superpower – offering breathless encouragement and insightful interpretation while ascending the mountain – sets him apart. His favorite aspect of his role is the guided climbs, where he helps others experience Mt. St. Helens, gaining a renewed sense of excitement through their perspectives.

In his personal time, Gary is an avid outdoors enthusiast with a lengthy list of passions, including mountaineering, trail running, hiking, skiing, biking, and backpacking. He finds deep satisfaction in pairing a good history book with great coffee or wine, believing it to be his recipe for a day very well lived.
