Mountain Steward Volunteers

Promote safety and share mountain knowledge with hikers and climbers

Mountain Steward volunteers have a passion for hiking, climbing, and sharing the outdoors with others. They can be found on trails on all sides of the mountain, educating visitors about hiking safety and the mountain's natural history.

There are two volunteer assignments within the Mountain Steward program: Climbing Stewards and Hiking Stewards.

Learn more about both volunteer roles and the requirements for each position by reviewing the assignment description.

Hiking Stewards

Hiking Stewards rove some of the most popular trails on the Monument such has Lava Canyon, Ape Cave, and the Boundary Trail. Hiking Stewards also support our guided hikes.

Climbing Stewards

Climbing Stewards volunteer to hike the popular winter or summer climbing routes. Climbing Stewards also support guided summit climbs and crater trips.

One of the most satisfying aspects of volunteering as a Climbing Steward is helping people achieve their goal of climbing to the rim of the volcano and taking in the awesome sights. It is like watching a child open a present."
