Join the Battle Against Noxious Weeds at Mount St. Helens!
Are you ready for a challenge? The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is under threat from invasive weeds, such as Scotch broom, which are spreading and hindering native plants.
We need your help to protect this incredible landscape! Join us, the Forest Service, and the Mount St. Helens Institute for a rewarding volunteer stewardship event on National Public Lands Day.
Can you help us win this fight and see how many pounds of weeds we can remove? Show your support for our public lands!
This is a free event, but registration is required.
Planning information:
- No experience required; we will provide training and tools
- Expect to be physically active at your own pace
- You are welcome to leave early, but please arrive at 10 am for safety talk and training
- Recommended for age 10 and older; youth under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
What we’ll do together:
This activity requires walking on uneven and sloping terrain, as well as performing tasks that involve bending, pulling, and lifting. We will be working a short 10-15 minute walk from the Science & Learning Center, which has bathrooms and running water. We will use hand tools to cut and bag noxious weed species. Teams will weigh their “catch,” and the winning teams will receive a prize.
What to bring:
- Wear long pants and sturdy shoes
- Come prepared with layers for the weather. This may include sun protection (such as a hat and sunscreen) and/or rain gear.
- Plenty of water. Water will be available to fill water bottles.
- Sack lunch. Snacks, tea, and coffee will be provided.
- If you have work gloves, loppers, and eye protection (glasses, safety glasses, or sunglasses), please bring them.
