Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980

Dr. Van Eaton is a physical volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey focusing on field-based geology to shed light on the behavior of volcanic eruptions. She uses stratigraphic studies to piece together eruptive processes, a variety of observational tools to characterize active eruptions, and numerical models to examine the internal dynamics of volcanic plumes.

What have we learned in 42 years since the iconic eruption of Mount St. Helens? In this talk, we will cover the geology of the explosive sequence on May 18th that left an indelible impression on the Pacific Northwest and revolutionized the field of volcanology.
