Mount St. Helens Institute staff will provide an experience tailored to fit your needs and interests, as well as add in some incredible storytelling to give you a sense of place in the rich history of Mount St. Helens.

WINTER ADVENTURES

Explore Mount St. Helens’ majesty in winter and see what makes Mount St. Helens so special! Depending on snow level, Winter Adventures may include snowshoeing or wintry hiking on trails on the south side of the volcano. Destinations may be June Lake, Chocolate Falls, or Oldman Pass.

SUMMIT CLIMB

This classic climb to the rim of Mount St. Helens offers an amazing opportunity to reach the top of the Pacific Northwest’s most spectacular volcanoes and learn about the area’s natural and cultural history in the comfort of a guided group. Designed for first time climbers or those wishing to learn from our experienced and knowledgeable mountain guides, the Summit Rim Climb provides an unforgettable adventure to those bold enough to climb an active Cascade Volcano!

GLACIER OVERLOOK HIKE

Hike to the breach of the crater from the famed north side and witness the transformation and rebirth of the Blast Zone, from Spirit Lake to the crater edge. This unique adventure travels off-trail on rugged terrain to a view that is eye to eye with one of the fastest-growing glaciers in the world, Crater Glacier. This staff favorite is as close as you can get without going on our Into the Crater Hike!

Eruption Hike

Traverse the ridgeline that separates the blast zone from the standing dead and hear first-hand accounts of the eruption on May 18, 1980, 40 years ago. We will hike up to Harry's Ridge, named after the lovable curmudgeon who lived along Spirit Lake, where a clear day reveals the breathtaking panorama of this active volcano. Beginning and ending at the Johnston Ridge Observatory.
