Bob began volunteering for the Mount St. Helens Institute in May 2008. He was nearing the end of a 40 year stretch as a National Park Ranger and was looking for something to do that was outside and where he was able to use the skills gained over those 40 years. He began doing trail work then added assisting and leading day hikes then snowshoe trips and finally adding organizing field seminars. Along the way he met his future wife Katherine doing trail work and both of them completed the first Volcano Naturalist training. Bob now organizes and leads our Winter Adventures and Field Seminars. Bob has a passion for sharing his knowledge of geology, history and native plants and animals. He enjoys being outside doing hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and kayaking and of course spending time with his wife and furry children. Bob lives not far from Mount St. Helens and has made the mountain his home. Bob grew up and worked in National Parks throughout the West and has a bachelors’ degree from California State University, Sacramento in Environmental Resources.
