Volcano Outdoor School

Bring your class or youth group to explore the mountain by day and by night with the Mount St. Helens Institute’s Volcano Outdoor School. Come face-to-face with geologic forces and discover the amazing stories of plant and animal life in the heart of the Mount St. Helens blast zone.


OVERNIGHT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

  • For school groups and other youth groups. MSHI provides instruction, lodging at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center at Coldwater, meals and snacks.
  • Stay up to three nights.
  • All programs include outdoor exploration.
  • Lessons support National Science Standards and MSHI will adapt schedules and activities to meet your goals.
  • A minimum of 1 adult chaperone for every 5 youth is required. The chaperones are responsible for the supervision of the group.
  • Arrive at 2:00 p.m. and depart at 12:00 p.m.

  • Geology of Volcanoes– Upper Elementary
  • Advanced Geology: Hazards –Middle School
  • Biology: Life Returns –Upper Elementary to Middle School

Program Pricing*

  • $75 per youth
  • $50 per adult (required 1:5 adult:student ratio)
  • Includes: 8-10 hours of education, admission to Johnston Ridge Observatory, lodging, dinner, snacks and breakfast
  • $100 reservation deposit, $1200 minimum fee
  • Maximum 40 youth

DAY TRIPS

For school groups and other youth groups. On your group’s trip to Johnston Ridge Observatory, stop at the Science and Learning Center for a special interactive 2-hour program. Can't choose just one? Stay with us for up to 6 hours to explore and learn about the mountain through an incredible hands-on experience with our expert staff.
