Recommended Gear for Field Seminars
2008 Field Seminars
Recommended Gear
Requirements for Climbs:
Participants should be in excellent physical condition because of the rigorous physical demands of the 12-hour long climb. You will climb 4,500 veritcal feet in 5 miles, an approximate 6 hour one-way climb to the crater rim (8,365 elevation). Participants are responsible for providing their own equipment, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat and plenty of food and water. Technical mountain climbing experience is not necessary but the ability to ascend and descend long, steep, rock and ash-covered slopes is essential. We recommend that you have vibram, lug-soled hiking boots (ankle-high), hiking poles, boot top gaiters, layered clothing, rain jacket and rain pants.
Requirements for Other Seminars:
Each Seminar has specific gear requirements. You will be sent a list of gear for your specific seminar in your confirmation letter. However, please be aware that all of our seminars involve outdoor activities and you should always be prepared with food, water, good hiking boots, layered clothing and rain gear.
