Equipment Needed for Climbing Mount St. Helens
- Water --3 to 4 liters.
- Food: High energy food recommended. Bring enough for several small meals and snacks.
- Sun Protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, SPF lip protection.
- Hiking Boots: lug-soled, water-proof, ankle support, 3/4 shank.
- Ankle Gaiters to keep ash and snow out of your boots.
- Rain/Wind gear.
- Layered clothing and warm hat: temperature can vary drastically. Be prepared with wicking clothing and layers.
- First Aid Kit.
- Trecking Poles
- Headlamp or Flashlight
Climbing conditions may require an ice ax and crampons. Conditions vary daily, even in the summer, so climbers may want to be prepared with this equipment.
Dogs are allowed on the climb however, it is not advisable to bring your dog. The pumice can damage their paws and there is no shade above treeline. Dogs are not allowed on MSHI Field Seminars and Guided Climbs.
